Kids can be hard on bicycles. I have a clear, embarrassing memory of myself aged about 5 burying my bicycle in the sandpit. It was never the same after that, and it was a relief to grow out of it.

Kids also take risks that adults wouldn't and need to be protected from themselves.

So we like our kids bikes to be sturdy enough to take everything that gets thrown at them, work well enough to be safe, and be durable enough to have a resale value when they've been grown out of. Unfortunately, this cuts out the cheap end of the market altogether. If you want cheap toys, you're going to have to go elsewhere.

For younger kids, we love the Puky (we say it 'Pookie') range. They come from Germany, and are fab. From two years old, we recommend the CAT tricycles.

They have a low centre of gravity, so are very stable, and can be pedaled with very little effort. They have a tipper bucket at the back, and a hand brake. Best for parents, the handle at the back allows you to push the trike along without bending over, so you can move at your pace not theirs! You can set the pedals to freewheel, so that they can rest their feet on them while you do the work. They start from £49, and we'll trade it in for the next model up when it's too small.

Once they get to 3 – 5 years, we have the 12" wheeled bicycle with stabilisers for £129. From 4 to 7, they should fit on a 16" wheel bicycle at £130. Both have a low centre of gravity for extra stability. Talk to Barnaby for some top tips on how to teach kids to ride without stabilisers.

FOR LEARNERS

LR1 with brake £85

LR1 without brake £65

it's so much easier to learn to balance when you don't have to pedal at the same time - much better than having to fit nasty stabilisers!

SCOOTERS

We have a variety of sizes, but the smallest - the R1 - is our favorite. The two wheels at the back make for maximum stability, and pneumatic tyres roll easily. it doesn't weigh much either, so you can carry it round the park when they suddenly become much more interested in something else.

R1 £47.50
R03 £65
R03L (air filled tyres) £80
R04L (air filled tyres) £90
R08L (air filled tyres) £105
R2002L (air filled tyres) £180

For bigger kids, we recommend Trek and Specialized. Both make a couple of 20" and 24" models. Baby mountain bikes, they have lots of the same components as the adult versions and the frames have a lifetime warranty, too. Other features that we like are adjustable brakes levers. They can be set closer to the bars, so that small hands can reach them safely. Gears are easy to use, although many kids ignore them until they've mastered pedaling, braking and cornering. Specialized make some cool BMXs too, suitable for both small and adult kids.

Because kids grow, we have a trade-in program. If you bought the original bike from us, bring it in – we'll give you money off a bigger size. Condition counts!

Even if it's supposed to be a surprise, we strongly recommend that you bring your sprog in to be sized up. We can adjust seat and handlebar height for you at the same time. If you can't bring them in, get their inside leg measurement, we can work with that.

All our kids bikes come with the same years free servicing as adult models – keeping the bike serviced will help with your trade-in value too!
