They look weird, don't they? Lycra shorts are a bit of an acquired taste, and there's no escaping that you look like a cyclist in them. Once you've tried them however, you realise why they're worn – they make saddles much more comfortable.

Different types are different prices. Basic shorts start from £19.99 . They are great for weekend rides, and can be worn under tights in colder weather. As with all cycling shorts, they are designed to be worn as a base layer, next to the skin. For more regular use, try some Pearl Izumi ones. More panels mean the shorts match your shape more closely, and so fit more comfortably. CoolMax fabric wicks moisture away from your skin. The material is thicker, more durable, and wicks better than plain lycra.

For the best, try on a pair of Assos shorts. At £74.99 they're not cheap, but for serious racing or long distance touring you'll appreciate the superb fit and comfort.

The liner is called a 'shammy'. They used to be made of Chamois leather. Genuine Chamois dries very slowly, cracks if it's not taken care of, and can harbour bacteria, so now liners are synthetic. I usually wash a new pair of shorts before wearing them, otherwise they can be itchy. A tip from Tour de France Pro, Robert Millar, Wash shorts and new socksin shampoo only, its the onl;y thing thats soft enough for the nether regions.

If you still feel squeamish about wearing lycra, try a pair of baggy shorts. They have a baggy cut, and so look like ordinary shorts. Underneath there's a liner that does everything your normal lycra shorts would do, but you can still walk into a pub and get served. They have pockets, which is useful too. Prices from £45.
