Wheel Builds

Workshop - Custom wheel
Bikes are used for a number of different purposes and whilst there is plenty of decent factory-built wheels out there, sometimes (a lot of times, in fact) you may find that the perfect for you combination of a hub, rim and spokes simply doesn't exist. Often this is the case with touring bikes requiring dynamo hubs, single speed wheels, vintage bikes, cyclocross and gravel bikes, and many more. Plus nothing beats a wheel tensioned to perfection by skilled wheel builder!

All wheels (built from new components) come with 3 month's free labour.

FAQs

What are my options?
You can choose from a number of different rims, hubs and spokes and it is all down to what will be the purpose of the wheel and your personal preferences. We stock a good range of rims and can source a lot more from manufacturers such as: DT Swiss, H + Son, Mavic, Ryde, Pacenti, BLB, Reynolds and more. Same with hubs, you can choose from a huge variety from Shimano, DT Swiss, Campagnolo, BLB, Hope, Dia Compe and more. As for spokes, for most builds we use double butted spokes from DT Swiss available in black and silver. For specific jobs we can source bladed aero spokes and other fancy options.

The best thing to do is to come down to the shop and have a chat with one of the workers. We will be able to give you an accurate quote for a custom build wheel that best suits your needs.

How long does it take?
Once we have all parts in a wheel build takes no longer than one day.

Can I supply my own parts?
Absolutely, but make sure they are compatible, so the hub has as many holes as the rim and the spokes are correct length. If you're not sure, we are here to help!

Can I reuse my old hub/rim/spokes?
A lot of times you might be able re-use your hub and rim, but it's all down to what condition they are in. You can't rebuild a wheel on a buckled rim or a rim with worn out side walls. On the hub, you need to look for any "play" (a movement that isn't forward), roughness when you spin the hub or any noise; all these are signs of wear on the hub. If you're not sure, hand it over to one of our experienced workers and we will be able to help you.
As for the spokes? well it is not advisable to re-use them.

Can it be done "on the spot"?
No, wheel builds need to be booked in, but can be done within one day.
